Oregon eye specialists have revealed data breaches in the optometry sector following employee email compromise. Hackers had access to mails and data over a two-month period. The exposed information includes customers’ names, dates of birth, dates of service, medical record numbers, financial account information, health insurance provider names, and policy numbers.
According to data breaches alert published on October 8, optometry sector specialists, which run six clinics in Portland, discovered odd behavior in an email account on August 10, 2021.
The company informed that an individual accessed certain accounts between June 29, 2021, and August 31, 2021. They were notifying potentially impacted individuals, but they had no evidence to suggest actual or attempted misuse of information as the result of that incident.
Oregon Eye Specialists ask potential victims to monitor credit reports and financial account statements for suspicious activity. They give access to credit monitoring and identity protection services.
Repeated Date Breaches
There have been at least four data breach incidents hitting the US optometry sector since June.
Two similar disclosures occurred in September. South Jersey eyewear supplier USV Optical reported a data breach affecting 180,000 individuals. At the same time, another employee email compromise at Delaware-based Simon Eye potentially had more than 144,000 victims.
The most noticeable breach of all was with Iowan Company Wolfe Eye Clinic in June. Moreover, it revealed that a cyber-attack had potentially exposed the personal data of half a million past and present patients with their protected medical information.
Then 73,000 patients were potentially affected by a ransomware attack against Eye & Retina Surgeons in August. It was a data breach against a Singaporean optometry firm.
